The two articles I think are worth talking about

I found this discussion around the cost structure of software companies and whether the return on equity is still favourable at this stage of the cycle. Some of the salient points are:

  • If anyone can create a new product, the creation of products will become commoditized.

  • Despite being seen as a ‘capital-light’ industry, the industry's economic balance sheet, as opposed to its accounting balance sheet, must look like that of a capital-intensive industry like airlines.

  • Understanding an industry is about understanding why it's different today to understand why it will end up looking similar to every other industry given enough time.

As someone who sees themselves starting a 1-person business as a launchpad for larger projects in the future, I found this article thoughtful and insightful. Here is the basic summary given by the author:

  • Swap scale for small and charge higher prices to businesses.

  • Instead of a social network, build a niche professional community

  • Instead of an AI blog, write an AI image-generation newsletter for social media managers

  • Instead of a general web-design agency, start a web agency targeting Logistics companies in the UK

  • Think of smaller markets with bigger budgets. The opportunities are endless.
